RTP (Return to Player)

RTP (Return to Player) is the percentage of the amount wagered that a casino game returns to players in prizes over millions of rounds — a 96% RTP means that, in aggregate, R$ 96 of every R$ 100 wagered comes back as winnings, and the remaining 4% forms the house edge.

What the number means (and what it does not)

RTP is a long-run statistical average, measured over an enormous volume of rounds — not a promise about any player's session. A slot with a 96% RTP does not return R$ 96 for every R$ 100 wagered by one person in a single night; it returns that in the aggregate of all rounds by all players over time. In the short run, an individual result can land far above or far below the average.

The complement of RTP is the house edge: a 96% RTP corresponds to a 4% edge. It is from that edge that the operation's GGR is formed.

RTP and volatility are different things

Two games can have exactly the same RTP and opposite behaviors. RTP tells you how much comes back; volatility tells you how that return is distributed.

CharacteristicWhat it describesEffect on the session
RTPPercentage returned over the long runSets the house edge
Low volatilitySmaller, frequent prizesLonger session, good for the casual player
High volatilityLarger, rare prizesStrong swings, attracts the aggressive-profile player

That is why a well-built catalog balances both axes rather than chasing only the highest RTP.

Why the operator needs to track RTP

One point that often surprises new operators: several providers distribute the same title in versions with different RTPs — for example, 96.5% and 94%. The configuration exposed to the player is a decision made by the operator and the platform, and it has a direct effect on retention. Games with an RTP above 96% tend to sustain longer sessions; below 94%, dissatisfaction and churn rise, and the margin gain per round rarely offsets the loss of players.

In the Brazilian market, regulated since 2025 by Law No. 14,790/2023 and overseen by the SPA/Ministry of Finance, games must come from certified providers and RTP is part of what is audited. Working with certified providers and keeping transparency about the exposed RTP has stopped being a marketing differentiator and become a compliance requirement.
